Introduction

The attorney-client privelege: What is it, and what does it mean.   Hi, my name is Dan Cogdell. I’m a lawyer here in Houston, and I practice primarily criminal defense work.

Attorney-Client Privilege

What the attorney-client privelege means is anything I learn as a result of having a conversation with you stays between you and I. Whatever you tell me stays between you and I. It means that I can’t share it, or disclose it, or publicize it to any person unless

A: You authorize me to disclose it, and

B: It’s in you best interest.

What is the Purpose?

The purpose of it is equally simple. What it means is I’m here to help you. The only way I can do that is if you’re absolutely candid with me, and I’m absolutely candid with you. When we meet, don’t shade things, slant things, turn things, or twist things with some sort of concern, or expectation, that I’m going to represent you more aggressively, or less aggressively, based upon your answer. I don’t care what you’ve done. I care how I can best help you. The only way we can do that, the only way we can accomplish that, is if I’m candid with you, and, as importantly, you are candid with me.

If you have questions about the attorney-client privelege, if you want to call to discuss your case, if you have questions you need the answers to, please call us. Thank you.
