In short, the court system often leaves families torn apart, parents angry, and children neglected. This is not a healthy approach to uncoupling, because although you may have fallen out of love, the process of separation should still be done with kindness and fairness.
I myself negotiated my own divorce settlement as a mother of three children a long time ago, and it really was one of the best decisions I made for myself, my children, and the family unit. My ex and I are still friends to this day, and although that might not be the future situation for you and your partner, it speaks to the power of mediation.
