Do You Give Second Opinions – Cogdell Law Firm | Houston Criminal Attorney
Dan Cogdell
You’ve been charged with a crime, you’ve hired a criminal defense lawyer to represent you, and now you want another lawyer to give you a second opinion. Will we do that? Hello. My name is Dan Cogdell. I’m a lawyer here in Houston, Texas. I’ve been practicing criminal defense work for 32 years.
Second Opinions at Cogdell Law Firm
The question is, do we give second opinions? Generally speaking, the answer is no. Why not? We don’t like to give second opinions for a number of reasons.
Case Review
First, it’s impossible as a second lawyer to come in in one setting and approve or disapprove, give a thumbs up or a thumbs down, to what another lawyer’s been doing or not doing on his case. It takes time.
Important to Hire Right Lawyer Early
Second, it’s important that you hire the right lawyer early on in the process. Far too often we come in and see situations where a lawyer isn’t doing what they should be doing or is not doing something that they’re suppose to be doing. In other words, it’s important to get it right from the start.
Realistic Opinions
Third, while I tell you we don’t give second opinions, we often get hired as lawyers to assume responsibility and take over cases if the client is initially dissatisfied with what their original lawyer’s done. What that means is, don’t come to us shopping to hear the right answer from a lawyer who’s not familiar with your case. We’re not going to tell you what you want to hear simply because you want to hear it. We’re going to give you an honest opinion about what we think needs to be done in your case, where you case needs to go, and what you need to be doing.
If you have questions, if you need answers, if you need input, if you need help, or you simply want to schedule a meeting with us, call me. My name is Dan Cogdell. I’m a lawyer here in Houston, and I’m willing to help you if we can. Thank you.
