Let’s face it, auto insurance is confusing but don’t let that prevent you from getting the coverage you need to protect yourself in a car accident. At Kelly & West we meet a lot of people after they’ve been in accidents and most are not sure what is covered, and what’s not. So here’s a quick breakdown on how your car insurance works.

Liability Coverage

Here in North Carolina, it is mandatory to buy liability coverage but you can also buy extra coverage, and many people skip this option to save money. But additional coverage can help pay your medical bills, cover additional car repair costs, pay for a rental car, and even pay you for loss of income and much more.

Additional Coverage

You probably want to buy comprehensive coverage, which pays for damage not caused by a collision, such as a tree limb falling on your car or a rock cracking your windshield.

The big one is uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. This protects you in case the other person is at fault but does not have insurance, or enough insurance, to cover your injuries and the damages. Let’s say the other driver had a minimum state limit of $30,000 coverage per person but you broke your back and had to undergo surgery. Your bills may be more than $200,000. You will only receive $30,000 from their policy, unless you have uninsured or underinsured coverage.

We recommend to our clients that they purchase $1,000,000 per person coverage and $1,000,000 per accident coverage to make sure they are covered. This insurance will also cover the family members that live with you and other people riding in your car.

If you have questions about what to do after a car accident, don’t hesitate to give Kelly & West a call. Whether it’s a problem with the insurance or the other driver, we want to make sure you are protected and get the payments you deserve. Don’t give up your rights, let us protect you.
