Prison Versus Jail

One question I’m commonly asked is, is there a difference between prison and jail in Florida, and the answer is yes. Although those terms are often used interchangeably, and many people consider them to be one and the same. The difference is that jail generally refers to the county jail, and that is where somebody serves their time while awaiting trial, while the case is pending, or where someone who is sentenced to less than one year serves their sentence. Anybody sentenced to serve more than one year incarceration, is sent to the state prison system, which is run by the Florida Department of Corrections.
